Canonesses (Sisters) in Jesus the Lord is a Public Association of the Faithful (as of July 31, 2010) in the diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri, under the authority of Bishop James V. Johnston Jr. in the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph.
How did Canonesses (Sisters) in Jesus the Lord begin?
In 1991, soon after the fall of the Soviet Union, two priests from the Midwest, Fr. Myron Effing, CJD, and Fr. Daniel Maurer, CJD, arrived in Vladivostok to help re-establish the Church in eastern Russia. Since then—and with their mission society's help—they have founded or re-founded 11 Catholic parishes, have developed numerous charitable initiatives, have created a variety of catechetical programs, and done much more.
Our Blessed Mother Mary asked for the conversion of Russia at her Fatima appearances in 1917. When Mother Julia Kubista met Fr. Myron and Fr. Daniel in 2002, she asked them what they needed most in Russia. They said "Sisters."
Mother Julia's long-time dream had been to help Mary lift the atheism that communism imposed on that country, and reawaken the joy of the faith. Canonesses (Sisters) in Jesus the Lord began in 2005 to help meet this great need for more young women and men to give their lives to God in religious life.
Canonesses (Sisters) in Jesus the Lord currently has a four sisters, a host of prayer partners, and an army of lay volunteers. Our community is faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
How do the Canonesses (Sisters) in Jesus the Lord serve in Vladivostok and far eastern Russia?
We are helping by:
forming and supporting university students in their faith
caring for orphans, street children, and other children in need
music ministry
catechesis
doing pro-life counseling and post abortion ministry
visiting abandoned elderly in their homes
Most importantly, we "are sisters" through faithful daily prayer with parishioners and through our community life. A most important work for missionaries is to help the people of the parishes to truly know that the Eucharist is the heart and soul of our faith. Sisters kneeling daily in Eucharistic adoration in the parish church, teaching the children, teens, and adults their faith, and working in the various parish ministries to the greater community are a vital help in establishing a lasting true faith.
